The Great Career Reset: Navigating a Changing Job Market

A transformation after unemployment

In summer 2022, Canadian unemployment hit a low of 4.9%, but by April 2025, it had climbed to 6.9%—and it's still rising. Behind the stats are real people facing job loss, uncertainty, and a job market that’s harder to navigate than ever.

Why is this happening? A mix of factors:
⚫ Economic uncertainty (incl tariffs)
⚫ Recession fears and corporate belt-tightening
⚫ The rapid integration of AI, which is reshaping skill demands
⚫ Shifting work models, including a continued push toward outsourcing and offshoring

And it’s only the beginning. Over the next decade, we will see more change than we’ve seen in a generation. Job seekers today face more competition, longer timelines, and tougher interviews. That can be daunting—but it doesn’t have to be defeating.

This moment demands what I call a Great Reset—a rethinking of work and careers; a reset on how we contribute and leave our mark on the world; creativity in how we design our roles; and out of the box thinking to respond and rebuild differently.

There are two truths to all of this:
1. It sucks. Layoffs are disorienting, painful, and full of uncertainty.
2. It’s also an opportunity. A chance to pause, reevaluate, and intentionally design what’s next.

That’s the space I work in. I help people transform a layoff from a crisis into a catalyst.

My mission is to help mid-career professionals discover work that fits—for who they really are, what they really want, and the life they actually want to live.

This is more than a job search. It’s a transformation.

Through Career Balance Coaching, I’ve supported hundreds of people through moments like these. And as the job landscape continues to evolve, I’ve also evolved my coaching to meet people where they truly are.

Clients aren’t just managing resumes and interviews—they’re navigating grief, rejection, identity loss, and often shame. While landing a new job is still the primary objective, it's important to address the roadblocks that can prevent that and focus on healing, rebuilding confidence, and aligning your career with your values, strengths, and energy, to land your best next job.

That’s why we focus on things like:
🟩 Processing the layoff and preparing your mindset
🟩 Getting clear on your unique value and what you really want
🟩 Crafting application documents that tell the right story
🟩 Mastering interviews with clarity and confidence
🟩 Being resilient and avoiding burnout during the search
🟩 Seeking support and feedback along the way

At Career Balance Coaching, we believe in whole-person, whole-life integration before making career decisions. Because your career isn’t just what you do—it’s how you live.

So if you’re in a moment of uncertainty, know this: you don’t have to figure it out alone. This can be the beginning of something better.
